A survey analysis of farmer practices and perceptions of zero-grazing on Irish dairy farms

ABSTRACT Zero-grazing (ZG; the mechanical harvesting and feeding of fresh grass) is increasingly used in grass-based milk production systems alongside conventional grazing. It allows farmers to supply grass from land parcels that are outside main grazing block during seasonal shortages periods when climatic conditions limit animal opportunities. The objective this study was establish an understanding current ZG practices on Irish dairy farms, capture farmer perceptions implementation management practice, identify knowledge requirements ZG. An online survey distributed completed by 130 who use or have 92% respondents. These farms were particularly fragmented, with between 1 14 separate blocks. Respondents felt helped them overcome fragmentation, increase use, extend spring autumn.
